Types of Sexual Dysfunction in Men and Women

Suffering from problems in the bedroom can be embarrassing and cause strain in a relationship. Sexual dysfunction can affect anyone, but the risks do increase as we age. Here are some types of sexual dysfunction that can affect both men and women.

Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction occurs when a person is prevented from wanting or enjoying sexual activity. This is different than a person who is asexual, which generally refers to people who don’t experience sexual attraction at all.

Common Causes of Sexual Dysfunction

  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Psychological issues
  • Drug/alcohol use
  • Medication side effects
  • Certain medical conditions

You might be wondering what constitutes having a sexual disorder. Not being in the mood sometimes is normal. If something is happening consistently and affecting your sexual life, then it may be time to speak with a doctor.

Desire disorder refers to having little to no interest in sexual relations on an ongoing basis. (Again, this differs from being asexual).

Arousal disorder refers to being in the mood, but your body is not responding properly.

Orgasm disorder refers to being in the mood and participating in intercourse but being unable to achieve orgasm.

Pain disorder refers to experiencing pain during intercourse.

What About Low Libido?

Hormone imbalances, certain medications, medical conditions, and psychological issues can cause low libido in both men and women. Low testosterone levels in men can be a common cause of low libido. For women, childbirth, breastfeeding and menopause can all cause changes in libido. It’s important to get your hormone levels checked and put in balance.

Sexual Dysfunction in Men

Erectile Dysfunction

Perhaps one of the most talked about sexual dysfunctions is erectile dysfunction (ED), which can affect men at any age. Stress, medications, certain medical conditions, trauma, and relationship issues can all contribute to ED. This, in turn, can cause a lot of stress and anxiety.

Ejaculation Dysfunction

Premature ejaculation, impaired ejaculation, and retrograde ejaculation are all issues that can affect men. Premature ejaculation can be caused by performance anxiety, but certain medications, stress, and nerve damage can also cause this dysfunction.

Sexual Dysfunction in Women

Pain and Discomfort

There are numerous factors that can contribute to pain and discomfort during intercourse for women. Hormonal changes during menopause can cause a drop in estrogen levels. Being unable to lubricate properly and involuntary muscle spasms can also contribute to experiencing pain.

Orgasm Disorder

Experiencing pain and discomfort during sex can also contribute to being unable to orgasm. Some other potential causes are stress and fatigue. Hormone imbalances can also contribute.

Treatment Options

Your treatment options depend on the type and severity of sexual dysfunction you are experiencing. If your sex life is being affected by something, be sure to bring it up to your doctor. Physical dysfunctions like ED have a lot of treatment options now. Sometimes switching medications or treating an underlying condition can relieve the problem. Hormone therapy can also be an option for both women and men. Psychological issues may require counseling, support, and education.
